NOVASUR is an educational television channel belonging to The National Television Council of Chile (CNTV) –the broadcasting authority in the country. Among other things, the Council has the mission of improving the quality of television programs and Novasur is a first and unique experience in Chile in this area.
The goal of Novasur is to contribute both, to the quality and fairness of education, using television in the classroom as a tool for improving learning activities.
ABOUT NOVASUR
Novasur started in 2000, with the support of the Chilean Ministry of Education, private entrepreneurs and other sponsor foundations, to create quality television for school children in the various levels and grades.
At present, Novasur channel is received in an important number of primary and secondary schools throughout the country. Teachers have been trained in its application and above 300,000 students can use this audiovisual tool in their classrooms.
The schools engaged in the Novasur project belong to the public educational system that receives state funding [1].
NOVASUR TELEVISION
Novasur television broadcasts two hours a day from Monday to Friday. It is carried to schools through cable TV services in the cities, and through satellite in the rural areas.
The contents of the programs broadcasted are in line with the Chilean educational curriculum for nursery, primary and secondary schools of the state educational system. The programs are selected carefully from countries such as England, Germany, Canada, and Mexico. There are also Chilean productions especially made for Novasur.
NOVASUR INTERNET
In the www.novasur.cl website, teachers can enter the monthly viewing guide and the lesson plans for each program. They can also review and obtain digital educational videos and other educational tools for the teaching practice.
This interactive website has been especially designed to create a permanent dialog among teachers, faculty members, and professional staff in the different areas of Novasur.
NOVASUR TRAINING FOR AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA APPLICATION
Training and follow-up activities -avowed by the Ministry of Education- are designed to train and technically support teachers in the Novasur project implementation process and in its applications in their schools.
THE ‘ORIGENES’ PROGRAM IN NOVASUR
Since 2003, Novasur has taken part in the governmental program called ORIGENES, which is aimed to assist the development of native groups in Chile (Mapuche, Aymara and Atacameño communities) in different areas of activity. This project covers 162 schools located in the most distant places of the country.
